Re: SAS SMARTtrain chemical application training

Hi everyone, This course is for GA's only. I have a new untrained lab assistant working with me, and we enquired about this course. She was told that is is only for GA's, not science lab assistants. Hope this helps you. If anyone finds a course on Chemical safety for new labbies, can you please let ...

Re: chemical orders through smartbuy

Hi all, Sorry for the late reply, only just had time to go onto chemtalk. I order almost all my science supplies through Serrata online. It is so easy. Once I have submitted the order, I print it out and take it to the finance lady who then puts into the Oasis system as a Serrata order. She doesn't ...

Hi, I know this is late regarding the Parramatta dry ice question, but I get mine from BOC at Kings Park - on Vardys Road.

Re: A Different year??!

Hi, Yes, I am noticing a difference - even crazier than before. This year has been much busier here, but it is a selective school. I am in NSW by the way. I wish I could have it easier, I too have a lot of "housekeeping" I could do, but don't have the time. To top things off, I have a new ...

Re: Safety in Laboratories Training Course

Hi all, I too went to this course 3 years ago and found it very interesting. We got some useful OH&S info and as a result bought scissor lift trolleys to ease the heavy lifting. I won't be going this time, as it looks exactly like the previous one, but the new part-time lab assistant may go and ...

Re: Swan neck glass tubes???

Hi, You want the 3 sets of tubing for Pasteur's Experiment. We have had to make ours. One cork has a straight piece of glass, the 2nd cork has a piece of glass bent at around a 45 degree angle and the 3rd cork has a "z" shaped piece of glass. I have one set, but now that we have 3 bio clas...

Re: Ester Disposal

Thankyou all so much. We will use an organic waste bottle, as it was what we were thinking. We thought down the sink was wrong - would you believe that came from the DET website. It is nice to have our thoughts confirmed.

Thanks again for you help.

Ester Disposal

:-(

Hi,
Can anyone tell me how to dispose of Esters? We have conflicting information - one says down sink to sewer and another says soak with perlite or paper. Please help.
thanks,

I think I will go with the metho. We don't have grafitti remover anyway, but plenty of metho.
Thankyou both so much.

OHP screen cleaning????

I desperately need your help. One of our teachers accidentally wrote on an overhead projection screen with a whiteboard marker.
OOPS!!! How do we clean it? I have whiteboard cleaning solution, but it states for non-porous surfaces, so I am not game to use that.
Thanks,
Carol.

Cleaning crucibles

Hi all, Like most of you, we now dispose of the really dirty crucibles, after they have been reused several times for the same chemicals. Also, you can use the clean sides, crushed, as boiling chips. Put paper towel under and over the broken crucible, and hit with a hammer until in small pieces. Thi...

Peanut power

Hi. We have canned this prac completely. Tiny Teddys can contain traces of nuts. Cashews and macadamias are nuts, so we wouldn't use them either. Most food packaging will state "MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF NUTS", therefore we have erred on the safe side, and simply don't risk it. Any minute amou...

Re: Breakages in classrooms

[quote="dolphinscales"]Ok another question – how many schools use a breakage register for the classrooms? This is for the teachers to note in it what was broken, when and how. Hi. We tried this several years ago, and gave up. The teachers would put the broken glass in the glass bin ...
