Re: Burning of Mg

Hi K and Sassi
I also heard the expression "scrubbers" said by a man (Paul Hogan) referring to himself and another man in the movie "Strange Bedfellows". The implication being that they were down from the "scrub" (country) and a bit "rough".

Re: Dataloggers

Hi everyone We have had Data Harvest Data loggers for at least 10 years (I've only been here 2.5). The pH probes have lasted very well in the solution bought for the purpose but this must be changed regularly (6mths or less if evaporated). pH Probes themselves should be checked before use the first ...

Re: Won't do that again!

Well, I can just top you with married at 19 (funny that) and together for 29 years just this April. Also just about to become "empty nesters' :D Unfortunately, my husband didn't learn the "yes dear" phrase - he's just deaf when he needs to be!

Re: Bunsen hoses

Hello fellow labbies I don't think there is a specified length (just looked in CSIS section 3) but you don't want it too long or too short (sounds like Goldilock's porridge :-( ) for your particular gas tap setup - all of them are probably different. The ones I have here are different to the other s...

Re: Do you go to faculity meetings?

Hi everyone Funny this should be asked. I recently went to Head of Admin staff (Burser)with this as one of the issues. I am never even told of faculty meetings (they are intermittant) let alone have any input through anyone. I have to try and "catch" as many teachers at lunchtime as I can ...

Re: Dead Goldfish

Hi All The lab was to see what happened when the gold fish were subjected to cooling the water they were in (with ice cubes) and then warming it (small amount hot water). HT said they would be stessed (!) and may not survive but I think the students were more careful and all survived. 5 of the 6 wen...

Re: Dead Goldfish

You must have had the same designers as here, Lou. We have a corridor that comes straight off the street entrance and the lock on my prep room door stops the door opening from the inside! We have just bought some goldfish for testing (not sure how ethical that is - but it is the HT doing the testing...

Re: Pressure cooker or autoclave total dissolved solids meter

Hi Estelle I had to buy a new pressure cooker when I started here and found a 9L one in a kitchen/ chef specialty shop for $150. I use it sterilizing the agar originally and for destroying the agar plates after use. I personally don't think a microwave is very good for destroying agar plates as the ...

Re: Lab tech VS library assistant

Louie has it right for private schools. My gross was $27000 last financial because my time was "averaged" over hols and I don't work Fridays. You don't get a choice in what hours you work and the various support staff are all on different conditions - very hard to get together with anyone ...

Re: test and tag OHS

Hi everyone What I said in my post IS the current legislation from Workcover. One of my bosses got a question and answer file off the workcover site. It used to be everything was tagged and DET still does this but the current wording ( and I phoned workcover to check) is that you have to fall into c...

test and tag OHS

Hi Everyone I need help and advice. The rules on testing and tagging electrical equipment (in NSW) changed a couple of years ago. It only has to be done on portable equipment used in construction or in a hostile operating environment . The examples given by workcover are where mechanical damage coul...

Chemwatch msds

Hi everyone Talking to my IT bloke this morning about chemwatch. He used to work for a mining company and they ditched chemwatch because the msds were not equal to the manufacturers msds and a workcover audit pointed it out. I recall seeing something recently when an email from Chemwatch trying to s...

Re: Phenolphthalein agar sheets

Hi Sharls I use a receipe like Sue's but have put in up to 80g agar in 2.5L water. Maybe my agar is old but the one time I put 50g in it didn't set. I was trying to save agar because I lost the first batch when the 3L beaker broke at the base - what a mess - it was like a wave that froze -you should...

I purchased some from Serrata just at the beginning of the year. They are listed as a set - Lever and Fulcrum - but you can buy just the ruler part. The rulers come with just a hole or with a brass ring.

Re: Nutrient agar plates

Hi Sharls I usually put all the warm agar into petri dishes. Any that aren't to be used straight away I wrap in plastic (as a group) and store in the fridge. If you watch your sterility when first pouring, they can last for weeks. I have never tried reheating nutrient agar - only phenolphthalein aga...

Re: MSDS

Hi everyone Just going through the updating process as well as most of the MSDS are 10 years old!(I only started at the school last year). I started updating in May 2007 but only got through the A's and when I looked at them again this year a few had been reissued! I heard on the email grapevine tha...
