Re: The boring life of MSDS's....
I thought as long as we were able to access a computer with the site in Favourites or with EASY access, we did not need to have printed/hard copies? I have a folder with all my MSDS's but never once in my 11 years at this school has a teacher looked at it, or even asked to look at it. The Admin offi...

I think the site www.zazzle.com.au has a variety of mugs and other scientific gift ideas. Is that where you are looking?

Re: supplying own paper towel
Our paper towel comes from the Cleaner's stores (purchased by the school anyway); but definitely not from Science budget. I do purchase cheap liquid soap for those teachers who do ask for it, but otherwise our students just get water and paper towel. As to lab coats, I have never seen a teacher at t...

SLIT PLATES for RAYBOXES
While I was recently on LSL my replacement, my wonderful casual Lab Asst, got together with a teacher here and MADE some slit plates. Since she wasn't sure if I had any in storage, and didn't want to order them, she MADE some. METHOD: Get some black cardboard, or black A4 paper. Laminate the paper/c...

Re: When you don't want to throw it away.....
I agree with the previous replies; also was told by Rotary that they don't accept any textbooks older than 10 years. Some of the ones I want to dispose of include a final print date of earlier than 1975!! Of course, we do still have some blue "Messel" texts. Could any Science faculty work ...

Re: Port Macquarie Workshop
Trish, I understood that it was being held at Port Macquarie High School. Since first being told that, (by the organisers) however, Sharon Ford knew nothing about it, nor did her HT or SAM. I think Sharon has been off sick, so am not sure what is going on there now.

Re: When you don't want to throw it away.....
Someone I recently heard of was GEMMA SISIA from Guyra, NSW. She apparently runs the school in Tanzania and has collection people and they do all the shipping. Other than that, if you give the stuff to Rotary, please check that they do not include the textbooks in an annual ROTARY BOOK SALE at your ...

Re: professional learning program for laboratory assistant staff
I have also noticed in the list of "Topics investigated" the following items: 1) New upgraded prep-room overview - most of us are not even listed for upgrades; and since very few of those who HAVE received an upgrade get no say in the matter of changes, what is the point of this topic? 2) ...

Re: Reagent bottles
Thanks for the advice, Liz. I might see if someone can fit them in a car to take to St. Marys, otherwise the Rotary option would be an idea too. May even do that first, as we have a very active Rotary group up here. I could fill a B-Double truck with stuff! Am sure no-one would notice.

Reagent bottles
I have about 5 boxes of used reagent bottles - up to 30 in each box - to give away. I also have lots of glass stoppers for them. If you are ever passing by Port Macquarie, please give me a ring on 6583-6400 and I will get them for you. Mind you, only talk to me... others might think we actually need...

Kiah,
I also have downloaded the photos, and they are fantastic. Just what the doctor ordered - or maybe not. Great resource, and we are printing and laminating them as I type. Thank you so much for sharing them.

Re: Update from Slarti McBartfast
Hey Slarti,
I bought my husband a Ducati for our first wedding anniversary (actually, I agreed to sign the papers for the loan for us to buy it). It was great back then, with the Conti mufflers etc., but he has always kept the 1942 10/12 (10 hp x 1200cc) Harley. Apparently, I go before it goes!

Re: Laboratory Officer
As Vicki stated, I thought we all were SAO's (school assistant officers). There is no definitive difference in the job description for a school assistant working in the front Office, Library, Home Science or Science within the Dept of Education. We ALL get the same pay rate which I find unbelievable...

Re: Upgrading of 800 science laboratories (NSW public schools on
Have just been reading all the information about new labs. I was told yesterday that we can expect to have 4 of our 6 Labs refurbished (before the start of Term 4). Not Prep rooms at all, just 4 labs. Nobody in Science seems to think it will happen at all, and are not appearing to be the least bit i...

Re: Audit time
Well, the auditors came to Science, (about 5 minutes before I was due to leave for the day) and I handed them my list of OH&S complaints which I had placed over the past 12 months and to which I had received no response. All they did was ask how I know my stock of chemicals is up to date!!! I sh...

Re: USE BY DATES
We have a teacher who has a Dble Major in Chemistry and she told me that chemicals do not go "off". However, if something is congealed and gluggy I get rid of it, otherwise I only keep stuff no older than 6 years (and only if I use it at least a couple of times each year).

Re: Collection of Hazardous waste in NSW
OK, the collection has happened. Pickup was with Transpacific, basic cost for my 5kgs was $166 plus numerous other expenses shared by about 25 schools from Ballina to Bulahdelah. (Approximately $800 all up I think). The pickup guys were polite, friendly, and we actually didn't need to sort anything ...

Re: What to wear
No fancy gear here - I just wear jeans and a single-top in summer, t-shirt in winter (with the jeans!). Naturally, black leather shoes. Aprons, I have a couple - all clear plastic! Very boring. But I might just look at Sthn Bio for their aprons - would be a nice change. Thanks

Re: Voltameters
Mushroom, you must have cornered the market on clever teachers - the last two times my voltameter was used, (even though I placed bottle of 2M Sulfuric on the trolley) the teachers requested Hydrochloric acid, and then told me to check the gear because it wasnt' working properly!

Re: Collection of Hazardous waste in NSW
Well, looks like the collection IS happening. Our quote is $166 (plus $395 transport costs, PLUS 12.7% fuel levy, PLUS $5 per pallet, PLUS environmental levy) for less than 12 bottles (doesn't quite fill two small cardboard boxes in which reams of paper are delivered). Pickup here is on 20th March! ...
