Potassium Bisulfate

Post by Narelle01 »

I have just been into my chemstore and found that the 2x 500gmns bottles of potassium bisulfate have kind of errupted.
The shelf that they are sitting on is stained, as is the bottle itself.

Why?
Clean up tips - was going to get gloves and goggles and lab coat and give it a good clean and wash the bottles. then replace in a ceramic dish.

Thanks!

How often do you use that chemical? My self I would throw it out, safe by garage, wrap in newspaper & again in plastic bag. We do have any at all. Not some thing we use. Wonder why it did that?

I'm with Labbie. If you don't need it, get rid of it, especially given what has happened to the bottles. And, it's a bonus it can be disposed of in the rubbish because, no one needs to know and no one will notice it missing!

It's Potassium hydrogensulphate. "CAUSES BURNS. IRRITATING TO SKIN AND EYES". Sounds like a strong base or acid???. Maybe just absorbed moisture and expanded. My bible says it can be "run to waste diluting greatly with running water". Personally I'd either dilute it flat out and put it down the sink or put the entire container into a sealed container for chem collection. It might corrode the bins!!!!

Check the CSIS to see how to dispose - poor garbage man if it comes apart in the bin while it is being handled..
