Hi
I'm wondering if any one can explain something to me. I made a 1M sodium sulphate with hydrated powder and the solution was neutral. I ran out of that so made a 1M solution using anhydrous sodium solution and the pH is 10. Shouldn't it be neutral? What am I missing? Can anyone help?

Re: sodium sulphate
It is a puzzle . It should be neutral, unless you used sodium hydrogen sulfate. Na ions and SO4 ions come from strong base and acid, so pH 7.
Let us know, if you solve it.

Hi All,
There is no problem with your solution, the pH change is due to the Anhydrous beginning to absorb water as you add it to make the 1M solution. Hydrogen in the Water is being raised to a higher energy level (into H3O+) and this is contributing to the pH 10 you are experiencing. This only needs a small amount to occur.
