Thorium Salt

Post by Mother »

Hi All
We have a Wilson's Cloud Chamber-expansion type that I have just come across in the storeroom(never been used from the look of it!!) The instructions say to use a weak solution of Thorium Salt but I can't find it in any of the catalogues that I have. Maybe, it being a radioactive solution it is banned. Does any of you bright sparks out there know???
Take care

Hi All,

Just to reiterate what Pommy has mentioned. Thorium Salts are Banned in DET schools, but out of pure curiosity, Thorium Nitrate is used..

Hope this has been informative for you.

Cheers,

Robb.....

Hi Everyone.
Does anyone out there use a Wilson's cloud chamber. It says to use it with Thorium Oxide which is a banned chemical. We've tried using it with our radioactive sources and ethanol. It isn't working very well. I've been putting in the source and ethanol then sucking out the air with the bike pump. Not much happening. Am I'm doing something terribly wrong? I'd appreciate any help/advice.

We use cloud chamber every year. The ethanol vapors must be cooled down with dry ice. We use Pb210 as alpha particle source. It works really well.I put ethanol on a small cloth in the chamber with radioactive source and dry ice goes under the chamber and cools the chamber down. Shine light into it and will see the traces of the ray path. You can use magnets to see if the trace will bend.
Good luck, Lada
