Hi all,
Can anyone give me a receipe for Ferroxy Gel?
I need to make 10 petri dishes worth, I also need the amounts of chemicals.
The Lab manual doesnt have it unless its known by another name.

I just prepared mine
You are supposed to use “normal†and “deoxygenated†ferroxyl indicator. You can find recipe “Chemistry Context 2â€Â
Add 3mL of FRESHLY prepared 1% potassium ferricyanide and 0.5 mL of phenolphthalein indicator to 100 mL of 0.1M NaCl. The “deoxygenated†version is prepared using well boiled water, and then cooled.
It should be prepared fresh as old one self oxygenate
The other experiment for iron corrosion is using agar mixed with 5 drops of phenolphthalein and 10 drops of potassium ferricyanide.

My recipe goes like this:
Heat 100mL distilled water to boiling in a 250mL beaker. Remove fromheat and add 1g agar. Return to heat & stir until agar forms a suspension. Don't burn the agar. (Safety messages blah blah - be careful hot stuff etc)
Add 5 drops of 0.1M Potassium Ferrocyanide & 3 drops Phenolphthalien.
Stir 3 times clockwise while crossing the fingers of your left hand (no I added that bit).
Allow agar to cool but not set, while you prepare nails by wrapping them in copper, zinc, mg or whatever.
Place nails in petri dishes and pour the gel mixture over them. Allow to set.
A teacher here says you can also just pour the gel into petri dishes and the kids can press the nails into the gels after they've prepared them. Tell them not to lick their fingers after touching the gel. 100mL is enough for two medium sized petri dishes, so I guess just multiply by 5.
