Finding phosphate levels with a Vernier colorimeter

Post by fibreweb »

We have recently received our new Vernier Lab Quest 2 with a colorimeter.

My Chem teacher had hoped to use it to test for Phosphate in the Water Quality in Yr 12 Chem but it seems I need Hach Phos Ver 3 phosphate powder pillows to use it.

I have never heard of these and can't seem to be able to find where I could get some in Australia and whether cost wise it is actually a viable proposition.

I have looked in our ancient stream watch kit to see if I could do anything with it but I cant work out how I could use those tablets instead.

Can anyone offer any help please.

Contact John at Scientrific. He is very helpful and as they are the distributor for Vernier in Aus, they should know either how or where to source them.

We use pasco, but I made up my own solution of phosphate (20ppm) which the kids then dilute to get their base graphs. I can try to find the method and 'recipes' for you if you like. After that they test their water samples and read off the graph.

I have some as I used to use HACH colorimeters. I think I got it from Selby Biolabs but I'm not sure they exist anymore

We now use aquaspex microtest kits

Wendy, try Laura at THS. They used to have some Hach pillows in Chemstore when I was there, but am not sure they are the same as what you're looking for...
