Hi
Has anyone used anything more interesting for electrophoresis than food colours? We only have the home made equipment and follow the Heinmann forensic science prac. Is there a way of easily doing DNA or proteins with this simple set-up?

Re: electrophoresis
There's a virtual experiment easily accessed at:
http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/labs/gel/
Interactive and no mess!!
We are planning to run it on the interactive whiteboard in the lab.
Hope this is helpful

Re: electrophoresis
I am so grateful for that site. In the years I have been here I think only once has the experiment worked. At least the students can see what they are supposed to end up with!
Good One!

Re: electrophoresis
We have just recently done the food dyes as well. You might like this site for some extra resources though - nice slideshow and worksheet.

Hi All,
Kathryn, Well.... I have to conceed that Biology is not my favoured subject .......but we won't go there........ but yes I have performed the electrophoresis and what works well are amino acids and the good thing about these is that we can colour them using Ninhydrin.... brilliant......
Cheers,
Robb.....

Re: electrophoresis
Hi Robb,
Have you performed amino acids on a basic home-made electrophoresis unit? If so, what aa's did you actually use?
