Quantity of Petrol Stored
Is there a maximum quantity of petrol that can be stored in a school - and how much is that? Where can we find out the quantities of dangerous goods we are allowed to have on-site.

Re: Yr 7 Crystallisation Prac
We have 2 digital video cameras mounted on microscopes - the Chemistry teacher did a prac making crystals in petri-dishes and we videoed tham .. fascinating to actually see the crystals form. We used a dataprojector and the whole class could see the process happening

Re: Do we know pracs in advance/provide classroom service?
In general I SHOULD know as we have the Topics for the year for Juniors all mapped out on a time-line, and the teachers all follow the Science Focus books. However, there are always those teachers who have their own pracs from 'years ago'.. most of which you can't do now.. those new teachers who loo...

Re: Accidents to science assistants
It actually turned out to be Copper Oxide- which burnt my eyes and my throat. There was no Risk assessment done by the teacher (who doesnt bother anyway), she had got all the chemicals she wanted out by herself, I had no idea what prac they had done - just a beaker appeared on the edge of the bench ...

Wow. I am stunned! 24 hours notice! How on earth do you get your teachers to comply with this? my HT often rings me from the classroom and asks me to bring her something RIGHT THEN> I have tried to insist on sufficient notice - but to no avail. I have been my own worst enemy though over the years - ...

Re: Accidents to science assistants
I have had a few accidents in my time as Lab Tech. I had a nasty one last year with an unlabelled beaker of black powder. It slipped in my hand and I ended up with it in my eyes and down my throat. I was alone in the science area, the teacher responsible for it was away from school at sport, and Iha...

Oh - Name and address please! our usual supplier can no longer obtain rock specimens. Seems their supplier has retired at nearly 80 years of age. The last lot of Moh's Sets were made in that large asian country to the north - and they had mica for talc!
I NEED a good supplier.

I send out a small tray with loose matches in it and the empty boxes - seems to work. The lighters are SO expensive and they run out very quickly.. and I saw why last week.. Students were using them to play 'sword fights' - imitation of Luke Skywalker I think... they were having an awesome time til ...

I think we should all add 'babysitter' to our Job Descriptions! The ones I love are the teachers with equipment blindness.. you know you put gear out for them on a trolley, maybe even set it up - and they come chasing you for their gear because its "not there" ... and they arent all male! ...

Plastic Disposable Aprons
We used to buy these from Livingstone by the box of 500. The last lot we got from Serrata were all packed into little plastic bags and were a thinner plastic. [The packaging showed that they had come from Livingstone originally]The main problem with them is the smell. one of our teachers had an imme...

We have had Data Harvest for over 5 years now and have very little trouble with them except for Internal batteries and we have had no luck getting the O2 sensor to give sensible results.. apart from that we have found that being able to use many sensors at the same time is brilliant. We take them ou...

I also add my voice - this is an overkill!! with care many chemicals and experiments can still be used in schools... will they eventually make us all redundant and replace pracs with virtual ones???
