Malachite

Post by Robbie »

Greetings all,

We have started teaching Earth and Environmental Science (NSW) in Year 11 and need about 2 kg. malachite for prac work. I have tried Geoscience in Canberra and Treasure Enterprises in Qld. with no luck. Any other suggestions from all you lovely people??

Robbie :-)

Hello Robyn (nice name)
you have a very nice guy near you in Turramurra. I hope he is still in business.
He runs Geological Specimen Supplies and can supply re-fills and bulk orders for the Students Geological Specimen Sets we all have. We get bulk malachite from him when necessary
I can PM you his details if you require them,
Cheers,
~Robyn

Oh - Name and address please! our usual supplier can no longer obtain rock specimens. Seems their supplier has retired at nearly 80 years of age. The last lot of Moh's Sets were made in that large asian country to the north - and they had mica for talc!
I NEED a good supplier. :D

Just out of curiosity, what do you need it for? I have never been asked for malachite before?

Malachite is basically Copper Carbonate so if you do not have it you can use CuCO3 as a substitute! The prac we have done here is basically just to ectract the Cu.

I dropped past Franks place in Turramurra yesterday to see if he was still in business.
He has moved but I have a contact phone number - just waiting for him to reply.

Hi Robyn...

Please let us have the contact number when you have it. It would be wonderful if he is still in business.

BTW, John Behrens says hello!! He's the one who asked for the malachite.

Have a good weekend all,

Robbie

We have made up our own:
1cup of plaster of Pares
1cup of copper carbonate
1cup of sand
Mix with water and let it set overnight.
Break into pieces and crush in mortar and pestle

Sorry, all
my contact for re-supply of rocks and minerals is not responding to many mobile phone calls. Maybe he has lost his phone? I know he has moved but I know not where.
I will continue trying but in the meantime, home-made malachite may be the way. We have made our own in the past and it works well.
Cheers,

Rainbow-Sky hello!

We don't need one 2kg. piece of malachite - but several pieces totalling about 2kg. in all.

However, after starting this drama of where to source it, would you believe I found a container of malachite in my own prep room...
so I don't even need it now!

It will be good to have the recipe for making some in the future when our present supply runs out, so thanks.

It's great to have such an active group of experts just a click away!
