Re: Peptone

It will still work. Just have to scrape some with a spoon. Don't suppose you have nutrient agar, then you don't need the peptone, and it is really easy to use. :-)

Re: Interchangeable joint kit

The flasks in our kits is a pear shaped flask and holds 50 mls, but you wouldn't fill 'em up. Thats what he puts the ethanol and water mix in. I imagine he would only want a small flask to collect the distilled ethanol, actually a beaker would do or anything really. It's a bit hard to describe how t...

Don't waste time trying to get out the stain. They will just burn mg in them again so it doesn't matter.

Re: u tube and jelly babies and potassium chloride

And thats why the test tube should be squeaky clean. I was told many years ago (before it was banned) to make sure I used a clean spoon, cause it could cause an explosion if another chemical residue was on it. Thank goodness I had always used a new spoon for each chemical anyway, and wasn't surprise...

Re: Overcooked Agar?

The phenolphthalein agar goes blackish cause the Sodium hydroxide is added when the agar is too hot. Cool to 50deg or below before adding NaOH and phenolphthalein. There was a good thread on this not long ago. But the thing is the blackish agar should still work with the acid, just not as pretty 8)

Re: Will we become private?????

I can't imagine it happening in the near future but I think it could definitely happen one day. Probably the govts way of cutting costs. It will be interesting to see what happens in the case of GA's. Maybe they will get an increase in pay, but at the expense of conditions. No doubt there will be tr...

Re: Plankton nets

That was a whale of an idea smiley! :cheesy: Are plankton nets the same as dip nets? If so, I make them from strainers - the kitchen ones, round with a handle and screw them onto a long pole ie a broom handle. They do tend to break as the kids are none too gentle, but I found some old ones in the Ho...

Re: what do you use to dissect on

Depending what they are cutting up, we mainly use plastic dissection trays (heavy duty plastic dishes 130x190mm - from Q stores) for brains, hearts and eyes. For rats we have wooden boards (ex shelving) with nails in each corner. The plastic boards would be easier to clean, but we don't do rats that...

Re: Bench Cloths v Paper Towel

I think they (the teachers) want the paper towel for the benches as well. I can't see being able to clean very well with wet paper. So maybe the paper towel for hands and bench cloths or chux for the benches? Thanks for your comments, have a great holiday.

Bench Cloths v Paper Towel

We have always supplied bench cloths (one for each bench) and a bath sized towel for wiping hands in each lab. I collect at the end of each term and get them washed. Our new head teacher (acting) wants to put in paper towel dispensers in each lab to replace the cloths and towels. My immediate...

Re: engraving magnets

Another method of marking equipment when engraving is not appropriate, is use a whiteout pen ie. liquidpaper. When dry, paint clear nail polish over the writing and let dry. This reasonably resilient and I have used it a lot ie on scissors, protractors, compasses but I must admit not on magnets. Now...

Hi Lorrae Thank you for your fax, all received. Looking forward to "digesting" it. It certainly seems Burradoo is in a great spot, I get sick of the heat and would like to experience the four seasons again as we don't get much autumn here. Oh well. Thanks everyone for your input, I appreci...
