Post by geraldine »

Hi everyone,

Have enjoyed reading everyones input with useful hints and ideas given out.

Does anyone have a good experiment for electrophoresis that works? If so could you please send it in.

Thankyou

Geraldine.

Hi

WE do a vegetable dye Electrophoresis experiment for the year 12 forensic science activity. you can use household items to do it. the basic items are 5 litre container (cut in half) or tray and takeaway tray (to hold the agar in) , power supplies, leads, carbon rods (or graphite ) as the electrodes and homemade comb (made from leftover trays) to produce the wells to hold the dye.

you don't have to use commercial gear.

If you want more contact me on kim.fenley@mn.catholic.edu.au

Hi Geraldine,

At an Inservice Course recently Kim Fenley demonstrated his electrophoresis kit and it was great, really great! Much cheaper than the kits available through the Science supply companies! It didn't look all that difficult to do either. If you haven't already contacted him about it, I think it would be worth your time to do so.

Regards,
DJ

Hi DJ

Thankyou for your information on the electrophoresis kit.

Can you please send the phone number for Kim Fenley who demonstrated his electrophoresis kit at the inservice course you attended.

Gel electrophoresis can be done in a butter container with equipment you are likely to have at school. It works really well with food dyes or texta ink. The instructions can be found at:
