I think the small crystal may have been Silica Gel, to help keep the damp air out.

Useing Milton or cold water sterizling in cheap and easy to use. It only takes 1 hour, and a good shaken and no spots on glasses.

Good enough for babies good enough for our safety glasses

I think we had this discussion earlier so try a search for safety glasses.
I put mine in the dishwasher at the end of each term.

This is probably the discussion you're looking for. I've started doing ours in Miltons since reading about it here. Nice and simple. I do them at the end of each term.

It would definitely be preferable for the students to have their own, but they don't even bring basic stationery requirements to class. We have to keep "lending out" pens, rulers, scissors and glue etc. So we would still have to have a backup supply for everyone who'd forgotten or lost their own - and then they'd probably go missing too.

Cleaning Safety Glasses and Goggles

A casual assistant told us of one school's way of cleaning their class sets of glasses and goggles.
They put them in the dishwasher!
She did all of ours - and they came out sparkling!
Beats soaking them in buckets of Methylated Spirits!

I tried that also, but some of the safety glasses arms came loss, must have been glued. So I use Milton cold water tablets, soak for an hour, place in warm oven to dry, job done.

HI All,

A very effective way to provide sterilization for your glasses is to obtain a UV light globe and an old lamp. Set this up in a large box flat on a table, have a hole in the top to feed the lamp adapter in the top and connect the light from the inside of the box turn it on and there you have it.

Simply, I have a hole drilled in my Safety Glasses cabinet where I feed my adapter in with the UV light always on, when the glasses are returned they begin the sterilisation process over again until next use.

When I don't need glasses simply disconnect the lamp and adapter and cover the hole or plug it, (This is what I do), and go from there.

Cheers,

Robb.....

My HOD vetoed the UV light. Instead he decided that we would have 20% metho in a bucket and a cube made from plastic coated wire [bought from Bunnings]. the students wash their glasses in the metho and put them into the cube to air dry. I never touch them, and it is his responsibility if this isn't enough disinfection.

I still love and use the Milton Antibacterial solution suggestion that was posted here. A quick soak, allow to dry on a towel and the job is done. I do it at the end of each term. Works for me...
