Aluminium Pot Sulfate

Post by Robb »

Hi robo,

There is a way that can be easy if you have a magnetic stirrer. Boil some water then add this to the solid crystals, and add a stirrer to the magnetic stirrer base and turn it on. Leave this until the solids have dissolved.

If this does not work make up a saturated solution of Salt Water using NaCl and bring this to the boil. The salt water will boild at a much higher temperature than water itself. Add this to the crystals and stir. This should solve your problem as the temperature will be considerably higher.

Cheers,

Robo,

Next time you do this practical advise the teachers that they need to use disposable plastic petri dishes. We did this some time back and the solution crystallised beautifully but also set like concrete. Fortunately we had used the plastic petri dishes.

We use plastic petri dishes also and the crystals pop out in one go when we've finished with them with a twist of the dish. Couldn't be easier!

I had mine set in the small beakers to what I did then was to turn them upside down and let hot water run slowly over the base and presto the crystals popped out 8O . Yes I will be using something else for them to put the liquid in next time. This is how we learn - by our mistakes :? .
