Bromine

Post by elaruu »

Hi all. A teacher has asked for pure Bromine, as opposed to Bromine water. This is teacher only, however he said he would demonstrate. Does anyone know where I would be able to source this? I can't seem to find anyone selling it.

Thanks!

You can get Bromine from Merck (very expensive for a once off demo), we only have the Bromine water on site... I have said 'no' to requests for anything different.

I'd be reluctant to have bromine around - bromine water is horrible enough.

Me too

For those who refuse to make up bromine water from scratch. (had a bad accident).
Georgia Deretic who co-wrote Foschem Senior Chemistry gave me a substitute that works just as well and less dangerous. :w00t:

Bromine in Situ
100 mls 2m Sulfuric Acid
50 gms Potassium Bromide
Dissolve
Add drop by drop of Hydrogen Peroxide (100 vol) till deep brown colour.
