One of my Chemistry teachers, who is currently teaching year 9 environmental science has come across a problem.
She is testing the water in the dams on our school site. She has added silver nitrate to a sample and the result is a (white/black precipitate - silver chloride). She has also got a (red/brown precipitate) with another sample, could this indicate that there is silver sulfide AgS in the water.
If not AgS, what could this be?

It could be iron and manganese ppt.
If dam is deep then you can not see discolouration but once exposed to air iron and manganese oxidising and give red brown solids.
If you want to be sure then test your water for hardness or do it ,stain clothing (white cotton cloth washed in the water.
