The Laboratory shows 0.5M is bench strength for Barium Nitrate, but at that strength (130.50g per litre) it wont dissolve. I have a prac for year 10 which requires Barium Nitrate solution. No recipe. No strength. help.

Barium Nitrate Ba(NO3)2 261.34 0.1M 26g in 1 Litre of water 13g for 500ml
1M to strong 0.5M 130.5g in 1 Litre of water 65.2g for 500ml
This should work ok.

Solubility of Barium Nitrate
4.95 g/100 mL (0 °C)
10.5 g/100 mL (25 °C)
34.4 g/100 mL (100 °C)

I agree that it would be hard to dissolve 130.5g/L, certainly at room temp . Looks like a saturated solution for sure

I'd be asking the teacher what they intend to do with it .
I think I would just go 0.1M without further info

Thanks I will go with the 0.1M, but why would The Laboratory give bench strength that clearly doesn't work? I did double check with another book and it also gave 0.5M.

I just checked and our droppers are labelled 0.5M (made up before I came).

After cleaning out the chemical cupboard, I have discovered we have bottles of barium nitrate labelled 1%, 0.5M, 1M and 0.1M. What would you keep? Just the 0.1M?

Depends how much you use, how much space you have etc. I sometimes decant into a bottle of each strength if they are in dropping bottles. I would keep 0.1M for sure.
