Yes chemwatch was put together for the DoE many years ago. The Doe pay them for us to use it.

In 3.2.3.2 of the new CSIS document has a table where guidance on separation and segregation requirements for chemical classification types state that some chemical groups have to be 3 and 5 metre apart or stored in a separate store.

WOW really. Or separated by glass.

Australian Independent Schools (AIS) also pay a subscription for us to use it. But Chemwatch wasn't designed for schools. We'd all be better off if the people signing us up to these things asked for our opinions first. I don't use it (I could write an essay why), I would rather the powers that be paid for our Riskassess subscription.

Not only questioning if the safety kid available but is it accessible??? Might be too busy in the safety shower!

I'm just blown away that there seems to be no changes to the chemical ratings .
I was also hoping that they may have included GHS recomendations for each range of molarity of a solution ......Risk assess makes this easy but unfortunately it does not always relate to what the CCIS (Chemwatch) says ....iiffn you can actually find it on Chemwatch.

I'm constantly having teachers arguing that the Risk assess label is wrong compared to DETRA recommendations .

Feel sorry for you in that situation. Being told to use something that is potentially out of date and not simple is crazy. All you can do is check with what your school wants you to use and go with that. If mistakes are made it is not your fault.

We use the ratings from RiskAssess for GHS. Basically the only thing we use Chemwatch for now is printing the mini SDS's to go on the trolleys. These often get buried on the bottom tier and the teachers never look or ask for them.

Ah, the dreaded mini SDSs. Safework NSW will not recognise them anyway so I really wouldn't go to too much trouble with them. I assume your Victorian WHS body would take a similar view.

Oh, and Anna, what they are talking about is the Chemical Safety in Schools package that the government schools are obliged to use. Non-government schools used to have access to this but not the updates. What we do have a copy of was written in 1999. We have have had two significant legislative changes in that time, so you can appreciate how out of date it is. From what Bigmack says, some of the chemical classifications (from CSIS) have not been updated.

Thanks Merilyn, yes very aware of the CSIS....the Chemwatch mini SDS thing is a hangover from past practices.... I am trying to change :(
