hi all,

Has anyone ordered bovine eyes from Dissection Connection?
they come frozen so the lenses will , no doubt, be cloudy?
the abattoir, apparently, won't crack the skulls anymore and the butcher I spoke to said he's happy to buy the heads and get the eyes out, but at $25.00 a head...................... 8O :-(

Oh yuk, never thought about how they got the eyes out...
I bought frozen eyes from Southern Biological a few years ago and yes, frozen and yes, cloudy. Although at $12.50 each from the butcher, it is still a cheaper option.

Hi Merilyn,

Unfortunately our budget won't stretch to that!
The butcher said I should go and buy a couple of big salmon instead ha ha!

I think those of us close to Sydney probably have a few more options. I know our local butchers buy from the local abattoir in Picton, but also get stuff from Cowra and probably others. Helen, have you tried a different butcher? They may be buying from different suppliers.

We are given ours by the local abattoir here in Tamworth. I know we are fortunate that they still do it for us.

At one point I couldn't get through to them and our local butcher offered to give me pig eyes instead. Not as big and easy to handle, but they were fresh and the lenses weren't cloudy! It was a bit creepy when I picked them up though, as the eyes were all lined up on a tray looking at me.

I buy all my dissection specimens from dissection connection. Bovine eyes I have never had an issue with, nor has any Teacher complained about cloudy lenses. They are vac packed pretty much straight away then frozen. I used to buy fresh from the butcher but every time I went to pick them up they had never been sent from the abattoir. They are a little more pricier than butcher but specimens are good quality. I used to find the hearts from the butcher were slashed and brains were often half with no stem. With dissection connection I have never had these problems. Hope that helps.
