Vacuum pump oil - what do you use?

Post by Labtechie70 »

Hi there everyone,

We need more oil for our vacuum pump, and I've been reading such conflicting views on the internet. :?
I'd love to know what type of oil you use......and where you buy it from.

Thanks!

As it looks like no-one wants to answer, I'll put my bit in.
Firstly I should declare I service Vac pumps as part of my business supporting labbies here in Vic.

First rule is use the oil recommended by the manufacturer - check the manual, check with the manufacturer/agent.

Rule 2 - when rule 1 doesn't work... needs a little explanation:

Vac oils have a Viscosity Index(VI) and mainly come in two groups
lower: 46-68 eg. Javac N15
Higher: 100+ eg. Javac N16

The rule of thumb for if you don't know which oil to use is based on type of pump drive system:
Belt drive use (VI) 46-68
Direct drive use (VI) 100+

general and important info:
The same vacuum oil is used for both vane and piston type rotary pumps.
Oil may yellow with time - it doesn't matter, but after about a year starts to deteriorate and probably should ideally be changed whether the pump is used or not.
When changing oil, run pump for a min or 2 to warm up, disconnect power, drain oil into container to measure approx. quantity.
Pour in 50-100ml of new oil to flush out last of old.
Seal drain and pour in new oil to slightly less than mark on sight glass. Run pump till warm and check level, top up if necessary - do not over fill!

Above info comes from a trusted very experienced professional vacuum pump engineer - not me!

Those who sell the pumps sell the oil too.

PM if you cant find info with make and model of pump and I will check my records.
regards Harvey

Thanks so much Harvey!

Our pump has 'XZ-1 Rotary Vacuum pump' marked on it, but the specs have rubbed off. It's quite old so I have no idea of who the supplier was.
One lab supplier sells compressor oil for vacuum pumps, but I'm not sure if this is ok to use.
I'll keep looking for a local supplier. Thanks!!!

Best wishes
