list of ionic and covalent compounds

Post by vic »

Dear Chemistry Buffs,

Do any of you have a lists of common IONIC and COVALENT bonded compounds that we would have in our chem stores, that you are able to share???

As i am more of a Biology person and I am looking to compile a list so when (like we had THIS MORNING!!!! :-? ) a teacher just asks for ionic/covalent bonded compounds for an experiment i don't have to spend ages searching the web and books for some answers....

Thanks in advance
vicky

Hey Vicky, not sure what the expectations are in your part of the world, but in NSW that is teachers' work not ours. It's good to know these things to be able to help out but my job is to provide the equipment and materials that the teacher orders, not work out what the teacher should be ordering. We all bring different backgrounds and skills to this job, so don't panic if someone asks for something that you're not sure of.
Of course, if someone has such a list, it would be good to share it with us!

I agree, the teacher should be asking for specific chemicals/materials. It is not up to you to do this unless you are comfortable guiding them.

Some examples:

Ionic Compounds:

Sodium Hydroxide
sodium chloride
calcium chloride
iron(II) oxide
Copper oxide
iron(III) sulfate
Potassium Iodide

Covalent Compounds:

Water
sulfur dioxide
Carbon Dioxide
Ammonia
Hydrogen peroxide
Ethanol

Hope that helps.

I would like to add that the teachers should be doing a risk assessment for each prac they do. In my opinion it would be impossible to do a risk assessment for a prac without specific chemicals.

Rock, I agree! The teachers at my school (and previous schools) would not have been given the chemicals if they didn't ask for them on the risk assessment specifically.
