Ammonium Nitrate 0.1M solution

Post by Kathryn »

Hi everyone

Our very old CSIS Bible gives ammonium nitrate an orange code. However it also says < 5% is non hazardous. Chemwatch also describes 0.5M as non hazardous. My question is can a 0.1M solution be given a green sticker?

Thanks in advance

Kathryn :)

Ours has a orange dot, Ammonium Nitrate can NO longer be purchased, we can only use what we have.

Ours is Orange Dot also .

0.1M is 8g per Liter ( according to my recipe book ) so it is less than 5% solution .....Good question Kathryn ...I can't see any reason why ours is an orange Dot other than there is nothing that specifically says <5% can be a Green Dot .

To my simple mind Non hazardous would suggest a Green dot or even a Blue one

(Just checked CSIS online and its still the same .)

Gee I really hope the new CSIS will be free of this sort of ambiguity .

On RiskAssess it's classified as for use by Yr 7-12 and becomes 11&12 only when >2.5M

Well that makes more sense Elizabeth .
But as a DoE school are we in our rights to trust what RiskAssess says or are we still bound to interpret the CSIS as best we can .
I'm still thinking about RiskAssess but if we can't be guided by it ( due to having CSIS ), is there any point .

We are a DoE school and the HOD (Science) told me that as long as we abide by what the CSIS says, we are covered. He said the Risk Assess program is unnecessary as the CSIS is our bible.

So true Mazcheck, but it does seem not every one looks at it all that way. You have a wise HOD.
