Good Morning All,

We are going to have an inservice chemical training session for staff next week (to update chemical training according to CSIS requirements).

Has anyone done this recently and have you any tips please?

I gave a training workshop on the last day of term 4 last year to all the teachers just part A, term 2 this year we will do part B, and later in the year Part C. It is all in the CSIS, quite easy to follow. Good luck.

GHS label should be happening this year, make sure all under stand the traffic light system. Green safe to go with 7-12 Orange or Amber get ready to stop and think about it yr 11 & Yr 12 ONLY, etc .

Is there a new CSIS package??!

No. .... still a work in progress.

It is being written by Alan Smith, should have been out by now, but as of 2 Dec last year it was NOT ready.

Is this only for DEC schools? I went to a day in Jan 17 this year held for anyone to attend at the Dooleys Club in Lidcombe put on by the Catholic sector.
I really wish we were ''all on the same page with this' chemical labelling.

Last I heard was that non-DEC schools have to purchase the new documents. They do not have automatic acess.. which means half of the students in thsi state are being discriminated against.
Our CSO will not purchase it, even though I have requested that.
So - what do we do?
Does this mean that we may well end up being non-compliant?

To add to sunrays comment, if we are classed as being non-compliant because CSO won't purchase the new documents, who is legally responsible?
I would assume it would be CSO.

Tell me to butt out as I am not in NSW, but from an outsider my understanding is that the document is a chemical usage requirement for government schools? Why then do non government schools need access? Shouldn't their relevant education departments either have their own documentation? Is it a legislative document? because if not then ultimately legal responsibility all comes under the WHS act so ultimate responsibility rests with the "person undertaking the business" which is arguably the Principal or director of your relevant education body. Anyway, just my 2c worth.

I know I haven't received any information regarding GHS or chemical safety, or anything to do with my job, from anyone else but other labbies.
If it wasn't for this wonderful site or my network of labbies up here, I would be completely lost.

I agree with Jodye. I have heard nothing!
However my understanding of CSIS is that it is used as a guideline for us as Non-government schools. Because we are still overseen by DECT(or whatever it is called) as far as accreditation etc I think it is expected we follow it as much as possible. I use a mix of WHS and CSIS.
Ultimately we must comply with GHS and any other government rules and regs!!

If you are a lab assistant in a NSW DEC school, have you seen the current issue of SchoolBiz (through the portal). Under the heading PROGRAM UPDATES, there is an article in relation to a review of the CSIS package inviting employees to participate in a survey. I completed it this morning, it only took a few minutes to complete.

I really hope so Labbie....I voiced my concerns about the lack of guidance I am feeling ATM about practical realistic ways to label droppers and tiny containers of Chems to comply with GHS labeling requirements and the contridictory advice we all seem to be getting regarding this.

I like CSIS ..it has been my bible along with "Working in science manual" since I started . I am appreciative of both resorces being available .

I listened to this yesterday, it was rather interesting.
The most salient point that I got from the facilitator was in answer to a question regarding what to do when the information regarding a chemical is different on Chemwatch or Risk assess to that which is in CSIS.
The answer was that CSIS ALWAYS takes precedent over Chemwatch or Risk Assess as the CSIS Risk assessments were done with regard to the small quantities that are used in the school situation whereas Chemwatch and others relate to industrial quantities.
