Update on GHS – Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals
The United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) is now law in most states in Australia as part of the process of the national harmonisation with the new Work Health and Safety legislation. This session will review this classification system for hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods and the new terminology, pictograms, safety data sheets and labels. The session focuses on what has occurred in the past twelve months and at the new information available for managing chemical safety. What do I need to know and do to comply ?

New Work Health and Safety Legislation was introduced on 1st January 2012 .This presentation will concentrate on the aspects of the new legislation, the roles and responsibilities of employers and employees and how it affects the workplace.

For those who have not heard of the GHS : The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) is a single internationally agreed system of chemical classification and hazard communication through labelling and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
It includes harmonised criteria for the classification of:·
physical hazards, ·
health hazards, and ·
environmental hazards.
This is now in law in Australia and we have 5 years to comply from 1 January 2012, but we are being urged not to wait until the last minute. It is being implemented in stages and we are expected to keep abreast of the information and areas that must be changed. [For example – we are not to placard chemicals with the old Dangerous Goods placards, even though we can still store them in those classes.] It affects the WHOLE school, EVERY faculty that handles chemicals of any classification must know what it entails and must comply with the new law.
The new WHS is connected with this. Chemicals that have been classified as dangerous and/or hazardous before can no longer be classed as such – they are all Hazardous . The old pictograms are not to be used any more and the new ones must be phased in as soon as possible.Storage of chemicals has changed for some chemicals.The Register of Dangerous and Hazardous Chemicals that each faculty must prepare will no longer be valid – it is now the Register of Hazardous Chemicals.

Since I grew up in Newcastle I'm going to show our HD and see if I can drive up for it plus get to visit my daughter who has moved back up there for UNI

ASET Conference in Newcastle: we are sending invitatiosn out to High schools as far as Kempsey and Port Macquarie and to Tamworth - so if you can drive to it come! The Charlton College is right next to Fassifern railway Station, so coming friom Sydney isn't too difficult - just look at the timetables for State Rail
A large contingent of us travelled down from here to the two ASET days in Sydney - so to travel this way for Sydney-siders isnt any different.
there are people driving the 2hours from Taree on the day, so make a group of it, car pool and share the driving..
There are two local caravan parks who have cheap accomodation and if necessarywe may be able to arrange a bed for you with our local Labtechs overnight .. .
BE ADVENTUROUS!

Hi Rae,
It went extremely well, despite a hiccup at 9am the night before when the GHS speaker messaged us that he was too ill to come... The committee did a fantastic job preparing a presentation themselves. The feedback was very positive .
The workcover person was very good, and Fizzics education was FANTASTIC! they have virtual classes for those in rural areas or will come to your school to give a presentation [ http://www.fizzicseducation.com.au/]
All those who attended were very impressed - from reading their feedback sheets, and also from comments made in conversations.
was well worth the time put into it..
and Charlton Christian College deserves credit for coming to our rescue when we had to move from the original venu.. and what a perfect setting , having morning tea sitting in the sun with a view of hills and sky and clouds!! sigh....
