Hi all,

I have inherited a very old lab with a few chemicals I have never heard of. One of which is Sulphanilamide or Sulfanilamide or Sulfaniamid. Has anyone come across this chemical and if so what would we use it in a lab for?

Also how do I dispose of it?

Hi Julz,

Just to clarify the chemical Sulfanilamide. The chemical Sulfanilamide and Thalidomide are what is used in Medicinal Chemistry as a potent drug. Its main use is for treating Bacterial Infections.

If this chemical is ingested it can cause death. It was once prepared as an Elixir and given to people to kill them. (Was used in the lethal injection up until the late 1970's).

This is one chemical that certainly surprises me to be in schools..

According to CSIS Appendix 2, Sulfanilamide is able to be used by Yr 11-12, is toxic if ingested and isa liver toxin.

Chemwatch says it is Not Hazardous and Non- Dangerous Goods

Risk Statements:
• Ingestion may produce health damage*.
• May produce discomfort of the eyes*.
• Limited evidence of a carcinogenic effect*.
• May affect fertility*.
• May possibly be harmful to the foetus/ embryo*.
* (limited evidence).

Safety Statements:
• Avoid exposure exposure - obtain special instructions before use.
• Take off immediately all contaminated clothing.
• In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water and contact Doctor or Poisons Information Centre.

As for what you would use it for - I have no idea!!

Its just surprising to see it in schools, although there is some preparation to make Elixirs the white solid on its own is toxic but not to the effect of what happens hen prepared, a complex reaction but yeilds surprising results for what is the final product.

What is incredible is that this "drug" is used as a lethal injection yet it's classified as a non hazardous, non dangerous chemical? May be it should be revised!

It scares me to think I have chemicals like this on the shelves. I will ring the local hospital to see how to dispose of it or if they will take it.

Hi julia,

Don't get me wrong, the Sulfanilamide needs to be prepared as an Elixir, or a solution. Then it is ready to be used for that purpose.
As a powdered form then there is no problems and is relatively safe.
