Chemical not in the CSIS

Post by Narelle01 »

Hi guys, as my usual practice in expanding my knowledge, I read the CSIS each time i get a chemical out...this morning a chemical was requested that is not in CSIS.
Does this mean we should not be using it? I have printed the MSDS as we didn't have that either....

What was the chemical? It may have been under a different name.

Try Page 153 in Appendix D Manganese (IV) Oxide also known as Manganese dioxide. It changed class in feb 2009 to 5.1.

Dime.. when you do your Risk Assessment (for the prac)..you use your CSIS appendix D as well as the MSDS. The MSDS will tell you.

Well...they have never bothered to do the CSIS training here..but I did what I could do and relabelled all chemicals etc. I didn't realise we had to check that every chemical had changed its original classification. I just used the CSIS appendix D to classify all chemicals (some time ago) and chemwatch to do the labels, and from memory copper sulfate was the only discrepancy.
Because we do not do RA's so have no need to check chemwatch that often any more. But I do keep it on screen every day incase of needing MSDS. We do not print these.
I would have thought that the department should issue an update about chemicals as CSIS is our reference manual. Actually we have received one update since the original.
I am thinking that it would be quite a job to look up every chemical on chemwatch to see if classification and labelling has changed! 8O ....maybe when I have nothing to do

I do wish I had nothing to do. Refub going on and on and on, I am now packing up in another part of the school, still for science. I only check the chemicals that we have, each year I check to see if their is a new or should I say different issue date on the chemcials. At the same time I check that the class has not changed. If it has I write in my Bible CSIS book. Yes I know copper sulfate is a pain in the ___________________. Must say I very rareing find a change. Thats how I was trained by Alan Smith from DET. I know some schools say every 5 years to check the MSDS. But Hay I ONLY LIVE here. :w00t:

S'pose so. I have never seen one, but I have heard a couple of the teachers mention RA occassionally. Cause we are govt school, and they stay within the guidelines of CSIS they do not have to do one - for chemicals that is. As for other hazards I'm not sure what they have to fill out. I know there is a separate one for excursions again.
