elephants toothpaste photos

Post by RosalieM »

Hi Everyone :)
Just thought I'd attach a couple of photos from my demo the other day (including the one posted in the other thread already). They aren't the best quality... I hope to get some more today when I do it for Yr 9 (most of their class is away on an excursion so it'll just be a few kids). I'll be doing the diet coke and mentos one using the test tube method rather than my home-made contraption with a hot and cold bottles of diet coke, and also the elephants toothpaste again. Hopefully these ones will turn out better.
At times like this, I love my job!
Rosalie :D

can someone please post the link to the recipe and other thread for Elephants toothpaste ?

Does it have anything at all to do with "bubbles" ?

http://www.chemtalk.com.au/viewtopic.ph ... t=elephant should take you there... Also has some talk about the mentos and diet coke. Both produce copious amounts of foam/bubbles! If you do the elephants toothpaste with 6% it goes much slower and you can see the bubbles in the measuring cylinder. I did that with stage 2 so they could watch the reaction in 'slow motion'.

This picture inspired me to have a go at this prac. but my result wasn't nearly as spectacular as the one in the first photo. Now I've got to clean it up. Am I able to wash this down the sink. I think I should be able to. I did it with a 2M sol of Na I and the second time with solid K I. Worked better the second time. Thanks for the inspiration. Krysia

Just a note about my photos above - the one that looks like a sculpture is actually an action shot, and it didn't stay up like that. I didn't even see it like that!! It shot out the top of the cylinder then went all over the place. This photo is just the initial shooting out phase. The person taking the photo must have been very quick with her trigger finger! I have had a few PMs saying they haven't had results like mine, and so I started wondering if you were expecting it to stay up like that.

Gee Rosalie,

I appreciate that you're being kind to others and all, but I say just roll with the success! If the photo looks specatacular just say "Yes. I did that!"
