Culturing Yoghurt??

Post by Ian »

Hi all,
My Bio teacher is very keen to culture some YOGHURT bacteria (Acidophilus, etc) We can not get it to grow on a standard "Nutrient Agar" plate.
Does anybody have an agar recipe that will grow Yoghurt bacteria in a way that can be seen easily??

regards

I used to add some powdered milk to the nutrient agar mix, and although it never really dissolved well we always got good growth.
This year I bought Milk Agar powder from Southern Biological but haven't had to use it yet.

Hi Ian,

I think I remember many moons ago a discussion about this and someone used a tomato agar. I didn't get a recipe but maybe if you did a search??? I know not much help but it may trigger a memory!!

When working in the Ento labs we would add a teaspoon of yoghurt (bought in supermarket, any plain type with the bacterias you are looking for L Bacillius, Acid etc no need to grow your own) to the milk solution, lots of stirring, put a cotton tea towel over the top the leave it room temp for a day, then place in fridge. :-)
