My chem teacher is looking for a simple recipe to make electrophoresis gel. Can anybody help me?
Re: Electrophoresis Gel
Is your teacher looking at DNA or ink samples?

Begs the question as to why he can't find one himself. Bad day or not! No need to make your day unpleasant
Lyn.
P.S. Check the following sites I have just found.
http://www.vivo.colostate.edu/hbooks/ge ... ardna.html
for Agarose Gel Electrophoresis of DNA and
http://www.protocol-online.org
for Electrophoresis-Agarose Gel Electrophoresis Protocols.
Sorry, couldn't figure how to add attachments of the prac recipes.

There is a web site called Bright Minds at Qld Uni ( http://www.brightminds.uq.edu.au )
they have simple equipment and reciepe
but when I followed it using bicarb in agar it would not set properly so Ijust mixed agar in water and pour bicarb electrolyte over the top works well

Re: Electrophoresis Gel
Make a buffer solution of 5.4g Tris and 2.75g Boric acid in water to 1 litre.
Weigh 1g agarose into 250ml conical flask, add 100ml buffer, and heat to near boiling. Allow to cool ~55degC and pour into your container to set. Before running the gel, pour 50-100ml buffer over the gel, making sure the wires are immersed.

Re: Electrophoresis Gel
I have the print out of a electrophoresis prac from the Bright minds web site if you are interested in a fax of it.
I haven't done this myself.
I'm currently playing with electrophoresis of amino acids on chromatography paper.

Lyn I agree totally and he has apologised especially when he saw what I wrote! He was eating humble pie for a good hour afterwards.

Re: Electrophoresis Gel
We use this recipe -
Heinemann Unit 12, Forensic Chemistry:
Mix 7.5g agar in 250mL in cold distilled water in 500mL beaker. Heat until boiling and transparent.
(I cook it in the microwave)

Cindy, I'm glad he had the decency to apologise. Have a good afternoon (what's left of it) and a good weekend.
