ammonia/ammonium chloride buffer pH 10

Post by RosalieM »

Hi everyone!
Hope you had a good weekend :) I am just wanting to know how to make up an ammonia/ammonium chloride buffer of pH 10. The only pH 10 buffer solution recipe I found wasn't based on these chemicals, and the prac specifically asks for this buffer. If anyone can help me out that would be great!

Taken from page 53 of The Laboratory,
Ph Range 9-2 - 10.6
Carbonate - Bicarbonate buffer
Prepare two aqueous solutions.
0.2M Anhydrous SodiumCarbonate 21.2g per litre
0.2M Sodium Hydrogen carbonate (Bicarbonate) 16.8g pe litre
To make the appropriate buffer, add solutions in the quantilies shown. Make up to 100ml with distilled water.
For Ph 10.0 13.7ml of Sodium Carbonate & 11.2ml of Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate.

I shall send the others very soon.

hi,
I found this recipe in my Lab rat book .it is used in titrations but I never used it I can not promises it will work
Dissolve 64.0 g of ammonium chloride in 600 mL of concentrated ammonia (14.8 M,
28% NH3).
2. Slowly and carefully add 400 mL of DEIONIZEDwater with stirring. This should be sufficient
for over 120 titrations
Cheers Jazz

Old method we have here for Ph Buffer 10.1
Never made this up, so don’t know how good it is but you could give it a try!

Dissolve 6.75g NH4Cl in 500mls distilled water Add 57mls.conc. NH4OH and dilute to 1lt.

Buffer Solution; for complexometric titrations
pH 10. Dissolve 6.75g of ammonium chloride in 57cubic cm of 0.880 aqueous ammonia and dilute to 100 cubic cm.

Above recipe from "School Science Laboratories - A handbook of design, management and organisation" published in 1978. The chapter is 'Laboratory Reagents and Stains', p.176. It is the same recipe as John's.
