Hi Liz,
Great to hear of your adventure in the new job. Did you take before and after photos. I did! I'll email you some.
We are getting lab upgrades too! Woohoo! Looking forward to some bright new colours. (over olive green) Maybe I'll tie dye another labcoat.

Not game to change to plastic bottles - don't know enough about chemicals yet. Still on L plates.

Cheers,

Patti

Hello again Liz,
Just found the checkbox to tick when a reply is posted. And also stumbled on the attachments tab at the same time.
It is glaringly obvious that today is one of my office days when I actually have time to look at Chemtalk, as opposed to my Science days when I am lucky to sit still for 2 seconds.

Cheers,
Patti
Still a happy little Search Engine!

Having a slow brain day.
If I am wanting to dilute a 3 M solution to 1 M but only want 50 mLs Is the amount 16.6
and to dilute 2M to 1M only want 50 mLs is the amount 18.3
How do I figure it out???
Thanks Estelle

Use the C1V1=C2V2 formula, where C1 is the concentraition of you original soluition, V2 is the volume of the original soulution (what you are trying to find) and C2 and V2 are the desired volume and concentration of your final solution. Manipulate the formula so you have V1=C2*V2/C1
for example dilution of a 3M soulution to make 50mls of 1M soltuion
V1=1M*50ml/3M
therefore V1=16.6ml
So you got it right!!!
Unless of course I have it wrong too :?hmmm

OR you just make a one in three ratio and make 60 mls - as in 20mLs + 40 water. Who cares about an extra 10 mLs and its more accuraterer!

The second part of your Question, Diluting 2M to 1M for 50ml add 25ml solution to 25ml water

Are these plastic containers suitable for all chemicals??
I currently try and use 1L stott bottles(glass with blue plastic lid) for all chemicals but sometimes I don't have enough as they are in use and they are expensive compared to these. I think they would be very useful and cheap and easy to store!!

I love this website!!!

Hi Lorrae,
I used to keep a large number of storage containers with all concentrations of acids and bases. At last registration, I was told to keep only minimum.
Now I have 1L of 0.1M, 1M and 2M of all acids and bases and I use those 1L bottles. Ease to store and carry. All labelled and ready.
So to your question, I think  they are suitable for all common diluted acids and alkali.

I would not put Nitric in anything but glass
Also Pot. Permanganate & Silver nitrate are light sensitive and need to be in brown glass containers

Thanks, Ocker

I didn't know that about Potassium Permanganate.
I collect the rarer black plastic bottles for silver nitrate solutions.

Hi Lizzie,
I too, keep AgNO3 in those black plastic bottles, but I make fresh permanganate. I always thought, it has to be freshly made.
