Acidified potassium permanganate
Acidified potassium permanganate
Can someone give me a recipe for 0.1M acidified potassium permanganate please?
The one in my handwritten recipe book is impossible to decipher, and I can't find it in the 'bible' (The Laboratory)!
Many thanks,

Re: Acidified potassium permanganate
I have not used it by my recipe recommends o.1M permanganate in 4M sulfuric acid.
4g KMnO4 in 250mL of 4M H2SO4. This seems very strong.

Thanks, Lada
Mine mentions the 250mL of 4M H2SO4, and what looks like .74g of Pot Perm, but this figure has been written over, so I can't be sure.
Grateful for verification!

Re: Acidified potassium permanganate
I used 200 ml 0f 0.02 M Potassium Permanganate acidified with 3ml of Sulfuric acid. That was astisfactory for Ashley so it should be right for just about anyone! (year 12 chem?)

Hi All,
Any Concentration will do but I would not use anything higher than 4M.
For the ease of prep and also the most common solution I would use is 2M. This way you can be adiment that at this concentration there won't be any over flux of H2SO4 from a higher Concentration.
Cheers,
Robb.....

Thanks Lada, Wendy & Robb, for your input,
but I'm still a little confused
Would you please confirm the amounts for me?

Quantities for Acidified Potassium Permanganate
Hi Lizzieb
It comes down to how the solution is to be used and Also what strength is really required.
A good place to start is by using 2M H2SO4 and adding 200mL to 1000mL (1L). This can be added to a 0.5M to 1M solution of KMnO4. without fuss.
If you need more or less work on the above Volume and Concenration and work a ratio from that.
(Keep in mind though that this is a universal solution of Acidified Potassium Permanganate Solution, which contains a good mixture of both Acid and the Permanganate Radical).
Cheers,

Re: Acidified potassium permanganate
Hi, for 0.1M you will need 15.8g of permanganate in 1L of solution, or 4g in 250mL of solution. Is this what you need???

Re: Acidified potassium permanganate
I tend to make it up as it's needed, as it needs to be fresh. So I have 0.3g KMnO4 in a 200mL beaker, and fill to 200mL mark with 1M H2SO4 (or 1.6g to 1L). This gives about 8 dropper bottles.

Re: Acidified potassium permanganate
Thanks to everyone who helped me with this.
I added 4g of KMnO4 to 250mL of 2M H2SO4, which gave me 10 dropper bottles.
Great result, all good.
Wrote it in the Laboratory for future reference, and put a typed copy into the recipe book!!
Happy Tuesday!

Re: Acidified potassium permanganate
Hi all
We just did a prac. which required acidified potassium permanganate. I made up .01M of KMnO4 and just added a couple of drops of conc. sulfuric acid.Teacher was happy with the result. So there you go!! Would you call it bucket science? If so, it worked a treat!!!
Cheers
