Copper by electrolysis

Post by rae »

Hi All,

One of our teachers wants to do a experiment with dilute sulfuric acid and copper oxide. After mixing these and then gently heating the solution turns blue (CuSO4). It then requires a conductivity kit attached to a 6volt power supply.
What I need to know is what wires should be used to make a conductivity kit attached to a small light globe so that the copper deposits on them??
Thanks Lorrae

After the solution turns blue, filter off residue and use the clear blue filtrate.
I use two graphite electrodes immerse in solution, connected by plastic coated copper wires to a power supply. Use setting 6-9V. Make sure the electrodes dont touch .After few minutes, pinkish deposit appears on one of the electrodes.
Hope this helps.

Hey Lada,
Thanks for the tip.
I've just set one up, just as you described using carbon electrodes and a light globe as well.Just have to wait for the copper to deposit.

Thanks again
