The case of the disappearing ice...

Post by RosalieL »

We have a relatively new freezer (maybe 4-5yo?). It is an upright with the flipdown doors on each shelf. I use the top two shelves for ice cube trays/containers of ice ready to go to classes, and the other shelves for other random stuff... Sometimes I find the ice cube trays are completely empty. Other times they have a few mm of ice remaining. Is this ice just "evaporating" because it's a frost free freezer? I know the teachers aren't using the ice because they wouldn't line the trays up so neatly if they were returning them empty :cheesy: I usually find them in a tub or thrown in the sink if they've used ice without a prac request. Does anyone else have to remember to refill ice trays if ice isn't being used frequently? Should I be rearranging the freezer and trying other shelves? Or do I need to set reminders in my calendar to check the ice once every few weeks to top them up? Is this why ice cube trays often come with lids now? Ice doesn't generally stick around in my home freezer long enough for me to know if it would disappear in there or not...

We had that Ice thief in our old Lab Rosalie Trays would empty themselves after a few weeks . The Freezer I have here is older and doesn't do it .

I generally have Ice in it all the time but I will check the day before when I see I need it on Riskassess.

Have you considered an Ice maker ?
We have a Morphy Richards 15Kg one from Hardly Normal at home . It keeps up with all our Gin & Tonic requirements :whistling2:
If we come home and there is no Ice, by the time we have had a wee and unpacked the shopping , there is a glass full of ice ready for something tasty .

My Brother in law got a cheap Icemaker about the same size and his basically melts soon after it is made . Whereas ours will stay frozen all night if we turn it off . He's buying one like ours now .

Yep, it's coz it's a frost-free freezer. Borrowed this from the hinderweb - It uses a heating element and a fan to periodically melt any frost that forms and then circulate dry, cold air throughout the freezer ... Fortunately our canteen has an ice machine.

I'm curious - the advertisement says you can choose your ice cube size but I can't see what sizes are an option. Does it do crushed ice? Or is it easily crushed if that's what you're wanting?

This is the big size .They are maybe 35-40mm long and about 25mm diameter . They are bullet shaped with a hole that is maybe 8mm from the tip
The smaller ones are just a smaller diameter .
It doesn’t crush them .I’ve never tried , but I recon they would smash up fairly easily .
