What is this ?

Post by bigmack »

Dragged a tray of stuff out for Tag testing .
There was an old IEC water distiller in the tray .

But what is this thing ? Never seen it before .It appears to have never been used and maybe it has absolutely nothing to do with the water distiller .
There was also a bag containing two rubber bungs that have a few holes in them .The bungs have gone hard and are oozing oily stuff .

Any ideas

Google tells me this

"The image shows a small-scale distillation apparatus, often referred to as a hydrosol machine or a water still. It is used for steam distillation, a process that extracts essential oils and hydrosols from plant materials. "

Best I've found is that Eisco make a version of it also .They recommend using it with their linear expansion unit.

Still got no idea what the Sample pot with the handle is used for .

Haines and Science First (used to be Mad About Science) sell these. If you use either of those suppliers they may be happy to email you an instruction manual to go with it.

I took your advice and Haines kindly sent me a copy but there is no mention of what the sample cup is for .
It was just your typical modern day manual that is basically about safety and not much else .

I'm not totally sure, but I would use it like this (not to scale :D ). This is to remove the sample from direct heat from the bunsen at the bottom of the flask. You can see on your picture that it has a release vent to prevent the flask from becoming too pressurised.

Also with Haines, if the product has a user manual, you can generally download it when looking at the item down the bottom of the screen under downloads. I find obtaining it there easier that scanning the manual when we receive it in order to keep an electronic copy of the manual.
