Broken Newton's Wheel

Post by Wayne »

It's Friday afternoon and can't think straight. The rubber ring thing that makes the attached Newton's Wheel work has broken. A quick search around the lab and then google search (and inevitably using the wrong words) I can't seem to find anything suitable for the job.
Any suggestions of what to replace it with?

We had one of those at my old school . Same thing , the belt broke .
O’l mate before me just put a couple of , maybe three , big ass rubber bands on it .

Not sure where that come from…. But it worked

Used the same rubber bands on one of those big hand cranked Dynamos . …. The things with a coil that spins between magnets .

Once you find a Rubber band that fits and grips ,without too much stretch , just keep adding more until it has the the torque to drive

EDIT : Only just thought of this , but when I was a TV technician , we used to repair a lot of turntables and cassette decks that used belts .
WES components ( suppliers to trade) … also known a Wagner Electronic Service was where we got all our belts . They had nearly every size belt in about 1mm increments .

They didn’t have the big fat round belts that are used on nutens wheel , but they did have a lot of belts .

You can mount the wheel onto a drill if you get stuck.

Try a NBR 70 O-Ring Metric 115 x 3mm
AIMS Industrial Supplies
02 9773 0122
customerservice@aimsindustrial.com.au
sell them at $1.40
SKU: A0126039

But they would be available from many other suppliers.

Thanks for the replies.

I had delayed ordering a $1.40 item that costs $10 to post (hadn't felt like defending why we need to spend more on postage than the actual item to the finance officer).
This morning I was trying to identify and find the use of some small, round metallic discs of varying metals, so I was searching through various science suppliers to see if I could get a hit. So far haven't got a hit but did find that Scientrific sell spare belts for $6.00. Already needing to order a few items off them so will add it to the order and save a few dollars.
