Post by CC »

Hi everyone,

Thanks Cindy

If something is returned to the preproom it is placed in the broken tray and each sports day I see what I can repair and I fix it and designate the other items to the correct staff member for repairs.
At the end of each term I go through the storerooms and check anything that looks broken and get it repaired if it has been put back broken.
Dont know if this is what you are after but this is how our labs work - we have 5 labs and it seems to work ok here.

What you do is draw up a maintenance schedule, run it by your HOD, explain it to all your teachers, and then watch it go out the window from the madness that is term time!

Mine works like this:
If it's broken you can't use it until I fix it. If you want it before then, fix it yourself.

Works for me!

I tend to do microscope maintainece in the 2nd and 4th terms as they are used mostly in teh 1st and the 3rd.

things like bunsens and guaze mats get done term wise.

meters all get checked 1st terms and 3rd term - multimeters have batteries out in the last week, along with other equipemnt that have them of 4th term.
resistance jars get checked over along with mounted globes at the same time. I also check power packs over - leads and knobs all there and all in good order.

chairs in the room all get checked over each term.

Fume cupboard is also cleaned out each term.

each term Mr Bones (skeleton) and other modles get washed down and the metals bits on teh skeleton get WD40'ed.

all aqauriums get half water changes twice a term.
tereriums get trimmed once or twice a year depending on the terrerium and what is in it.

electrical leds get put aside and at he end of each term are repaired.

safety glasses are all washed at end of each term

each term i check the teats on bottle sin chem store and replace if required.

At stock take chem store shelves are wiped down.

freezer is defrosted at end of year

i know there is heaps others but this is all i can think of right now

I agree Ian, feeling very lazy here. Love your philosophy Julie  One thing I like to do on a regular basis is make sure when all "kits" come back in that they are checked and put back into order so that they are right ready to go when needed next time. By this I mean light boxes, molymods things with lots of bits and pieces in and that are likely to have had things lost or transferred into a neighbours box. All the rest are on my to do list and tackled when ever I have spare time.

Hi All,
I was asked by my HD recently for maintenance items that the Science department and the school are responsible for, especially during the Christmas break, when contractors and the school maintenance team can get to them unhindered.
So far what we have come up with is:
Science Department-
1. All the schools waste chemicals to be collected by Chemsal P/L.
2. Science equipment to be repaired (that we haven't the expertise to correct ourselves).
3. Lab coats/safety glasses in for their annual wash.
4. Annual fume cupboard inspection.

School-
1. Plumber to check all sinks for potential blockages and gas connections for leaks.
2. Fire extinguishers/fire blankets to have their bi-annual inspection.
3. Air conditioner filters to be inspected and cleaned.
4. All flickering/broken fluorescent lights to be fixed.
5. Service the photocopier if necessary.
6. All first aid kits to be replenished.
7. Department to be inspected for spiders.
This is in addition to the weekly maintenance of the labs by the lab tech team.
Cheers,
~Robyn
