Textbooks

Post by Kathryn »

We have a heap of old syllabus textbooks which my HOD does not want to keep. Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Senior Science. Seems such a shame just to dump them. If anyone is interested could you let me know or if you have any suggestions of charities which may be interested.
Thanks
Kathryn :-)

We're in the same boat - a lot of Heinneman text books and others. I hate to throw anything away, there is always someone whose needs are greater than mine.

Your local Rotary Club may collect to send overseas, or know of a charity that does.

A lot of the time the charities won't take them as the freight costs are too high. Seems a waste, I know. If you have to dump them, at least remove the plastic cover and put the rest into recycling.

Same here. We have hundreds of Science and Maths texts to dispose of.
The only group I've found in SA, who collect books to send to less fortunate overseas countries, don't want text books!
I hate to throw away such a resource, but I can't keep storing them here.
If anyone finds a group (especially in SA, where I can deliver them to avaid freight charges), please let me know.

Just wondering what textbooks are popular at the moment? Do you use online only or physical books? I saw an ad for sciPAD recently and am curious to know if anyone uses this (it has a physical book as well as online).

We're using Pearson 7-10. The students get an e-book and we have 3 class sets of each book spread around the Science block.

We also have a single class set each of the 2015 version of Amazing Science 7, 8 and 9 published by Oxford. That's a popular one to leave for relief.

One big thing to watch out for is next year the lower school curriculum is changing. Biggest change is year 9 plate tectonics is getting absorbed into the year 8 rocks unit and year 9 earth & space is becoming the carbon cycle. It looks like sciPAD are ahead of the curve cause I looked at the year 9 preview and it's already got carbon cycle stuff in it and year 8 has plate tectonics in it.

Oh god after all the fuss our HoD made about the class sets of textbooks (despite it being wholly unimportant) I am not looking forward to having to do it for another year when they bring out updated textbooks :cry2:
