Thought I'd start this thread because I couldn't find another one like it, and I couldn't find any posts relating to a heat retention prac.
I recently discovered that a pool noodle sliced into about a 2-3cm length to make a doughnut fits neatly in the top of a 250ml beaker and some sizes of coffee mugs. A small universal stopper fits in the hole. You can use this to hold a thermometer and use the noodle ring as an insulating lid. You can compare the heat retention of the mug vs beaker this way.
Feel free to add any other random bits and pieces of knowledge/discoveries you might like to share!

Re: Helpful Hints
Ooh I like it! (both the theme of the thread and the hint)
We've got a similar set up with metal containers but with styrofoam lids that are getting ratty with age. I'll keep it in mind if we ever go to change them over
