metho/water distillation

Post by RosalieL »

I need your help! I told the chem teacher (actually a bio teacher) about a prac we used to do at my previous school where they distilled metho and water and were able to light the metho in an evaporating basin at the end if they had done it correctly.

Does anyone have details for this prac?

Thanks!!

Iff’n you were , it is best done with heating mantles . Sticking a glass boiling flask over a bunsen with a metho/water mix is an accident waiting to happen .

If you have 10% metho and 90% water in the flask , that is pretty save and won’t catch fire should the flask brake .But the distillate that is collected from the condenser would be just over 50% abv and be very flammable still .

We do this, but we ALWAYS use a heating mantle rather than a bunsen burner.
