potassium hydroxide
What's better for purchasing KOH? Pellets or flakes? Do either of them store better than the other? Similar prices.

I find flakes are easier to get accurate weights. The pellets have to be crushed if you need a precise measurement.

I find after a while you become quite adept at picking out the pellets you need to get the right amount.bucketchem wrote: ↑12 Feb 2025, 11:36 just about ease of use really, i know for our school the precision of the pellets is perfectly fine
Is that one of the world's most useless superpowers? Being able to eyeball which hydroxide pellet will be just right without going over when you're 0.02g off your target?

The alternative is farting about picking and choosing while the pan full of pellets starts absorbing moisture and gets there first

Re: potassium hydroxide
I find this with the sodium hydroxide - I suspected it would be the same for potassium hydroxide. The flakes are slightly cheaper so I'll give them a go.Pm706Narrogin wrote: ↑12 Feb 2025, 12:05I find after a while you become quite adept at picking out the pellets you need to get the right amount.bucketchem wrote: ↑12 Feb 2025, 11:36 just about ease of use really, i know for our school the precision of the pellets is perfectly fine

Side note for anyone interested. You know that cleaning company called koh? I knew it was called that because potassium hydroxide is the main ingredient so I looked it up to see if it was a cheap/easy way to buy a ready-made KOH solution (in a hurry). According to the ingredients list, the universal cleaner is a <0.5% solution so people who use it are basically paying for water!
