Storing ferric nitrate

Post by Marama T »

I know that ferric nitrate is hygroscopic, but how on earth does it seep out of closed container and cause a rust-coloured, sludgy build-up on the shelf? The container does not have any obvious damage. The pics are of a piece of paper towel I had on the shelf under the jar and of the storage solution I've bodgied up because I can't fit a dessicator on that shelf.

You could try Dry Gel or real name is Silica Gel, comes in little pack's free with shoes, tablets etc etc, we would ask the students to bring them in, place one ON THE LID Not on the chemical it's self, seal palstics bag with tape, it could work. Non ahydrate pulls in the moisture from the air, hence your brown rust marks.
