Apparently we are no longer allowed to keep Americium in schools (NSW anyway) because of handling and storage issues with this particular isotope (info. from supplier). If you're just after an alpha source Polonium 210s can still be bought from various suppliers but the half life is very short (approx. 138 days) and it's jolly expensive, as they all are. Would be interested to know from other schools how they deal with radioactive experiments. Do you just buy a new alpha source every year or two or perhaps just model the experiments?
