conduction of electricity in salt and sugar solutions.

Post by Rita »

Hi All

Year 7 to do this prac. Using transformer and light to see difference in conduction in salt and sugar solutions.

Which electrodes would be best to use?

Thanks in advance

Well carbon is safest. Although I wouldn't use a transformer with Yr 7's. We use a simple battery circuit, with alligators, a mes (little light globe stand bizzo) and carbon electrodes. There are fairly simple conductivity rigs out there, using wire probes, that can work in a test tube, for example. There are even ones that use an LED instead of a globe.

The main issue is don't leave the electrodes in the solutions for very long, especially a salt solution, because you'll start making chlorine and poisoning the little cherubs. 8O Unless, of course, you want....oh no, ahem, I mean, of course you don't want that to happen

Ahh Ocker, if only. But yes, they didn't irradiate my sense of humour, thankfully.

We have always used transformers with year 7.
