Acidified Potassium Permanganate

Post by annettegascoigne »

Hi, could anyone provide me with a recipe for acidified Barium Nitrate? For measuring sulphate in fertiliser.
Thanks.

For acidified Potassium permanganate....
.01M of KMnO4 and just added a couple of drops of conc. sulfuric acid
Haven't heard of acidified Barium nitrate

Is it gravimetric? We use 7% barium chloride solution to drop out the sulfate from fertilizer ( it presipitates as barium sulfate)

We use a saturated solution of Barium chloride.

From a Chemistry teacher....

acidified Barium chloride is what is needed....... sometimes we use a bit of HCl first to acidify and then add barium chloride.
It will form Barium sulphate precipitate...which is wanted

Acidified Solutions

Post by Graham Kemp »

Yes.

To acidify a solution just means to lower the pH below 7.0 using a slight addition of an appropriate concentrated strong acid. That is all.

The only 'trick' to it is to choose an acid that doesn't form a precipitate with your solution. Usually this simply means to match the acid with the anion. Hydrochloric for a chloride solution, sulfuric for a sulfate, nitric for a nitrate, et cetera.
