Potassium thiocyanate

Post by vlclabbie »

Hey guys,

Does anyone have a recipe to make up 1L of 1M Fe(SCN)2+ ?? I did it last year & now can't find my recipe!

I know I didn't use a stock chemical for it & I remember it involving making up 2 vats of chemicals to then mix to make a third..... I think!!!!

Thanks so much if you can help!

Cheers Kel

You just need to add 1 mole KSCN to 1 mole Fe(NO3)3 in an acidic solution (use nitric) and dilute to volume. Then store away from light.

The acid keeps the Fe{3+} ions stable and prevents the formation of Fe(OH){2+}. The thiocyanateiron complex will form in an equilibrium reaction; a blood red colour should form. It's the classic qualatively test for the presence of iron(III) in solution.

Nowhere. The potassium ions remain in solution.
