Organisation Environment
BioLAB – The Victorian BioScience Education Centre is one of six specialist science and mathematics centres in Victoria. The 4.4 million dollar funding for this exciting project was announced as part of the State Government Energising Science and Maths Strategy (2009).
Construction of our state of the art educational facility was completed in June, 2011. We are now at the stage of internal fit out, program development and trialling which will continue throughout 2011 and an official launch will be held in late 2011.
BioLAB’s focus is to engage and inspire the next generation in science and mathematics using innovative technologies and techniques. It is a state wide educational resource and will be accessed by primary and secondary students, teachers and the general public.
BioLAB will showcase the best in bioscience research and careers including focus areas such as medical, sport, and health sciences, biotechnology, materials technology and biomechanics.
BioLAB will eventually have a staff of approximately 7 individuals; Director, Senior Education Officer, Education Officers (2), Laboratory and IT Technicians and Administration Officer. This will also be complemented with a number of casual and internship employment opportunities for tertiary/postgraduate students.
Key Responsibilities
A key responsibility of this position is to provide technical laboratory management and support to the general daily business of BioLAB, which is, running hands on educational programs that inspire and engage primary and secondary students, teachers and the general public in cutting edge science and mathematics research and careers.
This position will specifically focus on the set up and management of the BioLAB laboratories as well as assisting the Education team in developing and integrating the specialist equipment into our programs. In particular the Laboratory technician will require a proficiency in the set-up of molecular biology and biotechnology equipment and protocols and/or sport science equipment and testing.
There is scope for this position to also assist in the delivery of programs alongside the Education team and supervise undergraduate students in casual employment with the centre.
This position is a 6 month contract. However dependant on the experience and qualifications of the successful applicant the job scope and duration is flexible.
BIOLAB LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
Duties:
ï‚· Manage the initial set-up and integration of BioLAB laboratories, preparation area and specialist equipment.
ï‚· Assist the Education team with initial program development, including equipment integration, development of protocols and staff training.
ï‚· Perform intricate and routine tasks in preparation for practical classes by trialling experiments and conducting chemical and physical laboratory tests
 Prepare and set up all science materials and equipment required for a range of BioLAB programs – including research grade biotechnology and biochemistry equipment.
ï‚· Set up science displays and demonstrations for BioLAB teacher professional learning days and BioLAB Conference days
ï‚· Where applicable, assist education staff with demonstrations and practical sessions.
ï‚· Coordinate, order and record all science department consumables, chemicals, materials and equipment
ï‚· Maintain science equipment and consumables according to DEECD and OHS regulations (including chemical storage, waste disposal etc)
ï‚· Record and regularly update the Hazardous and Dangerous Goods Register
ï‚· Obtain, record and provide all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) required for science classes
ï‚· Review risk assessments for all science experiments using hazardous substances in the classroom
ï‚· Prepare, monitor and record equipment and chemical stock lists
ï‚· Assist visiting teachers/Science professionals to design and carry out experiments as part of professional development activities at BioLAB

Huge responsibility = little pay!
and yet, looking into it , isnt that what most of us do every day for even less pay?

Yes, interesting to compare what other States are paying, this is the pay for 48/52. This is about the 3rd or 4th school that has offered this level, in the State system, most LT are below this level/rate and finish at about $50,000 for 48/52.
