Glacial Acetic Acid

Post by Robb »

Hi Rainbow-Sky,

An easy question at that,

Glacial Acetic OR Glacial Ethanoic Acid is called Glacial from the fact that when it freezes it solidifies and forms a frosted network that looks like Ice Glaciers.

Hence why it is called Glacial Ethanoic Acid:

On cold days in the lab where temperatures get down to around 17 Degrees Celcius this is when the freezing of the acid occurs.

Next time its a very cold day have a look.

Hope this makes some surprised faces.

It has happened on occasions where I have needed to use this while conducting my experimentation.

Cheers,

Robb.....

Glacial Acetic Acid

Post by rae »

Hey Smiley,

Lucky you when I worked in Canberra We had to warm our glacial acetic acid to use it it had "Glaciers" all the time in winter. Winter temps in Canberra barely reach 10 deg let alone 17.

Glacial Ehtanoic Acid

Post by Robb »

Hi All,

It really is a pain when Glacial Ethanoic needs to be used, (If Glaciered), because it often warrants to be warmed before use.

But if require to make accurate volumes you then have to cool it to 20 Degrees Celcius to then make the required volumes.

Another Question
Is there a differance in Molarity between Glacial and plain ethonic acid or they just shortcutting name?

Glacial Ethanoic Acid

Post by Robb »

Hi All,

Glacial Ethanoic or Acetic Acid is the "Common" name for Concentrated Ethanoic/Acetic Acid. Glacial Ethanoic Acid is between 99% - 100% pure.

If you get Ethanoic under this Concentration it will be called just Ethanoic or Acetic Acid.

Glacial Ethanoic Acid has a density of 1.05g/l.

Therefore if the Acid is less that 99% - 100% the density is going to be considerably lower. This lower density does not allow the Glacier property to exist, hence why any other concentration connot have the Prefix "Glacial" used in its name.

Hope this answers the question..
