Hi everyone,
I need to write a list of things we do apart from the the day to day orders and general doing stuff for teachers.
Things like the chemical register or cleaning all the electrodes or fixing broken leads.
The sort of thing you don't have time for every day but need to do to keep things running.
I have a few written down but may get some extra help if I can come up with a big list and I can't think of them all off the top of my head.

* covering text books and numbering them
* keeping track of text books
* topic tests
* shopping
* safety equip testing eg showers and eye baths.
* anytime the science dept has to do something like morning tea - we do it!
tracking down needed materials from outside and inside the school (eg keeping in good with the TAS people to get sawdust)

add maintaining bunsen burners to your list and also ensuring benches have the correct equipment (although I have virtually given up on this)

cultivating and maintaining specimens (eg Euglena)
knowing where everyone and everything is every minute of the day

Getting into certain programs whose name starts with "Chem" and printing MSDS's and labels,
First Aid frequently,
Answering questions from inquiring minds,
Setting up DVDs, ClickView for relief teachers,
Taking photos of happy science students for the newsletter,
Entering into discussions/arguments with architects who don't seem to be able to look up the regulations before they design a new prep room,
Sourcing new and groovy ways of demonstrating basic scientific principals,
Pithing Cane toads
First Aid frequently,
Answering questions from inquiring minds,

Here exerpts from my list of things I have to do apart from the making up orders and cleaning up after them
* Photocopying
*Typing exams and worksheets
*Checking and repairing electrical leads
*Clean and maintain safety goggles.
*Seal up broken glass boxes when they are full and discard.
*Order equipment, textbooks, chemicals, requisition irems, exam papers, monitor faculty accounts and budget.
*Organize the repair/replacement of damages equipment.
*Maintain the Chemical register for science
*Keep a check that all equipment in the labs and prep rooms is there and in working order
*Make up chemicals as necessary, replenishing the stock bottles in the 3 prep rooms as necessary
*Cleany the video heads, keep trackof all the DVD's and videos even though I don't know who borrows them when.
*Restocking hand towel and hand wash liquid
*Repair bunsen burners and other items as necessary
*Check and repair microscopes when possible and necessary
*Checking the rayboxes to make sure all the equipment is still there
*Keeping records of stock-adding new equipment to records, maintaining databases, writing off old equipment
*Preparing nad collecting useful bits and pieces for use in science
*Cataloguing, maintaining and storing of teaching resources such as slides, DVD's, vodeos, chartts and models
*Thinking for teachers, reading their minds
*Cleaning up after teachers
*I have even beenhanded a name badge that had lost i'ts back and been asked to repair it. can't she use glue herself!

why is it up to me to find desks and chairs for the prac teachers!!!! GGGGRRRRRRR
We have 5 of these people in the staffroom on top of the aready 9 teachers in there.
And of course mwah!
Surely the big HOD sould be finding these things not me.
This is not a very good way to start the week!

Research!!! Scanning assorted sources (newspapers, magazines, net) for info related to topics.
Finding new or better ways to do pracs, trialling pracs, working out why pracs don't go the way the book says they should.
Looking after student teachers, introducing them to the idea of risk assessments and getting their orders in with time to spare.
Finding stuff for relief teachers, letting them into labs, locking up after.
Helping nonscience teachers who've ended up having to teach a line or two of science. ("To do this prac, first.... Make sure the kids are wearing goggles/hair tied back..... Don't let them do..... The results should be..... etc, etc)
Dropping everything and looking for the heavies when things start going pear shaped - not very often, but necessary.
